Picnics, graduation parties, and the beach: summer is in full swing! June kicks off the official start of summer, as well as the opportunity to celebrate Dad! He has done so much for us, so return the favor by helping him into a new fitness routine that shows the importance of preventative health.
A lot of us at WellnessMats love to exercise and some of us work out almost every day! Our families… not so much. One of the WellnessMat dads is in his 60’s and is an ‘occasional’ exercise enthusiast (we have all been there, right?) He hits his stride and gets on a cardio kick. He’ll finds his rhythm and then promptly quits.
We can be the motivation to get him and other dads back on track. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the number one killer of men. A brisk walk in the park with man’s best friend, jogging, or taking a bike ride around town, all add immeasurable benefits for your health. Exercises that use varying speeds are said to increase metabolism, and at the end of the day we could all tone up more!
But before lacing up your running shoes, make sure you get a pre-run stretch in! (Have you tried stretching on a FitnessMat?) Stretching helps reduce sore muscles, prevent injuries, and can improve your performance, effectively boosting your run.
-Holding your stretch 20-30 seconds. Stretch far enough to feel a pull but not cause any pain.
-Remember to breathe during the stretch. Getting oxygen to your muscles is imperative to a good stretch.
-Be careful when stretching an injured area. You don’t want to make it worse, and end up icing it by the end of the night!
